The Alchemy Pickle company is a gem. Founded in 2012, it aims to use traditional preserving methods to add flavour, nutrition and probiotics to your diet. Producing small-batch pickles and fermented foods from locally grown, organic sources, it’s fermentation and pickling just as nature intended.
We all know that everything tastes better pickled, but what you may not know is that fermented foods play a vital role in your health. Probiotics are the good bacteria that help to digest your food and support everything from healthy nutrition to mental health. We are just starting to unlock the important role that probiotics play in our lives, but you can read more about what we know here.
Aside from the health benefits that Alchemy Pickles provide, you are also supporting local farmers by buying their products and stocking your shelves with the most delicious fare. Alchemy process their fermented products, pickles and drinks fresh from the fields to you so you get a higher nutritional value and living food!
Rebekka Hutton is the founder of the Alchemy Pickle Company: “I had been working for several years in urban agriculture, so I already had the connections with local farmers. When restructuring made my job redundant, I took the opportunity to explore other options. There was a gap in the market for fermented food and drinks in Southern Ontario so I started Alchemy. I love feeding people and providing that link between local farmers and eaters so people have a connection to where their food comes from.”
Alchemy Pickle Company products are created utilizing traditional fermentation methods with unrefined sea salt. Without pasteurization or the use of vinegar, you get all the probiotics and bio-available nutrients you need. Alchemy’s farm-to-table policies mean all their foods are vegan and gluten-free. “Our products do have to be kept in the fridge – because they are living foods and we don’t add preservatives. Fermentation is one of the oldest and safest methods to preserve food and it really adds incredible layers of flavour to your diet,” says Rebekka.
